What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetics that can help people with missing teeth maintain their appearance, eat comfortably and speak clearly. Dentures can be used as a solution to replace a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth or even a whole row of teeth.

Replacing missing teeth is crucial for maintaining good oral health. Dentures can be a cost-effective solution for replacing your natural teeth if you are missing some or all of them.

At Dentistry On GreenLane, we offer several types of dentures depending on your needs.

Types of Dentures

Whether you need dentures to replace one missing tooth, a row of teeth or a whole jaw, your dentist can help you decide on the right option for you.

Full Dentures

If you are missing a full jaw of teeth, your dentist will likely use full dentures. These are also known as artificial teeth or complete dentures.

They can be customized to fit your upper or lower gums and are held in place by suction and/or an oral adhesive.

Full dentures are removable for cleaning and sleeping.

Temporary Dentures

Temporary dentures are removable dental appliances used to fill in missing teeth while the permanent dentures are being made.

They are typically made from a plastic material designed to closely resemble the natural appearance of teeth and gums.

Temporary dentures can provide patients with the ability to eat, speak and smile confidently until their permanent dentures are ready.

Implant-Supported Dentures

If there isn't enough gum tissue to support full dentures, dental implants can help anchor them for a solid fit.

Partial Dentures

If you are missing more than a few teeth, or if your surrounding teeth are not strong enough to support a dental bridge, your dentist will likely suggest partial dentures.

Partial dentures consist of one or more artificial teeth held in place by clasps that fit over your natural teeth. Or they can fit over a tooth replacement like a dental crown.

They are removable for cleaning and sleeping.

Flipper Dentures

Flipper dentures, also referred to as acrylic removable dentures, serve as a temporary solution to fill in missing teeth to restore your smile. These dentures typically consist of a retainer holding one or more prosthetic teeth and are most commonly used to replace missing front teeth.

If you have lost one or more of your front teeth for any reason, your dentist may recommend fitting you with a flipper denture.

In some cases, flipper dentures may only be a temporary solution. In these cases, they will likely be used as a placeholder for a more permanent solution down the line, such as a dental implant.

Benefits of Replacing Missing Teeth

For the sake of your dental health in the long run, it is essential to replace any missing teeth. Dentures can be used to give you back a full smile and can also help prevent further oral health problems.

By replacing missing teeth you can prevent other teeth from shifting out of place. Apart from the aesthetic concern, teeth that are not in the correct position can be more difficult to clean and you may be at a higher risk for developing gum disease.

If you are missing some or all of your teeth, implant-supported dentures may be a viable option to repair your smile and help prevent facial collapse by providing additional support to your jaw bone.
