Oral Surgery, Thornhill Dentist

What is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery encompasses the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and abnormalities of the face, mouth, teeth, and jaws.

While we always try to use the least invasive treatment option for a given dental condition, there are times when less invasive treatment choices are simply insufficient and oral surgery is required.

Dental Sedation in Thornhill

Sedation can be particularly beneficial for patients with a dental phobia or those undergoing complex or lengthy procedures. At Dentistry On GreenLane, we offer oral sedation and nitrous oxide sedation.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. It can provide a stable foundation for a tooth replacement, such as a crown, bridge or denture, to be securely attached.

Implants can be an effective solution for people who have lost one or more teeth. They can improve your chewing and speaking ability, and give you a more natural-looking appearance. Additionally, dental implants can help prevent bone loss in the jaw and maintain the overall structure of the face.

Open-Flap Periodontal Surgery

Open-flap periodontal surgery is a technique that can treat moderate to advanced gum disease. During the procedure, the gums are carefully lifted and folded back to expose the tooth roots and underlying bone. This allows the dentist to thoroughly clean the area, remove tartar and bacteria and repair any damage to the bone or surrounding tissues.

Patients with moderate to severe gum disease who have not responded to non-surgical therapy, such as scaling and root planing, are usually the ones who benefit most from open-flap periodontal surgery.

Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone. This procedure is typically performed by a dentist using specialized tools and techniques to ensure the tooth is safely loosened and extracted.

While it is generally preferred to save a natural tooth, it is not always possible. If a tooth is severely damaged due to decay, gum disease or an accident, it may need to be extracted by your dentist.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that erupt in the back corners of a normal adult mouth. Unfortunately, these new teeth are not always functional. They can cause overcrowding, impaction and even infection.

If the wisdom teeth are causing problems for your oral hygiene, your dentist may recommend removing them to help preserve your oral health. The procedure normally involves numbing the area with local anesthesia and surgically removing the affected teeth.

Bone Grafts

Bone grafts involve transplanting a small piece of bone to repair or regenerate bone in the jaw. This can be necessary when there is not enough bone to support dental implants or other restorative dental procedures.

To try and accelerate healing after a bone graft, our dentists might recommend either PRP or PRF therapy.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a regenerative therapy that uses a concentration of platelets from the patient's blood to promote healing. PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) is another type of regenerative therapy that involves using a fibrin matrix derived from the patient's blood to enhance tissue healing.

Indirect Sinus Lifts

An indirect sinus lift aims to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw. It involves creating a small incision in the upper jaw and then gently lifting the sinus membrane to allow for bone grafting material to be placed beneath it. This procedure is often used when there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw to support a dental implant.

As with traditional bone grafts, our dentists might recommend either PRP or PRF therapy to help speed up the recovery process. Both therapies use the patient's blood to stimulate healing and tissue regeneration.
